Children Don’t Choose to Die

Why Are ATVs So Dangerous? Design Flaws and Weak Industry Standards Exposed.

  • Engineered for Instability: Many ATVs feature high centers of gravity and narrow wheelbases. This combination makes them highly prone to violent rollovers, even when driven on completely flat ground.

  • Optional Safety Features: Instead of building essential safety mechanisms directly into the vehicles, manufacturers frequently treat them as optional add-ons.

  • Easily Bypassed Speed Limiters: For youth models, manufacturers rely on basic mechanical screws to limit speed—screws that children can easily adjust or remove. Even worse, federal recalls routinely reveal that these factory-installed speed limiters fail to meet basic safety standards out of the box.

  • No Adult-Size Overrides: Children routinely operate adult-sized ATVs, yet regulators and manufacturers fail to mandate automatic, un-bypassable speed overrides that could prevent fatal high-speed crashes.

  • Profits Over Protection: Rather than fixing these lethal flaws, industry lobbyists actively push for the expanded use of these vehicles while aggressively fighting against mandatory, life-saving safety regulations.

We are letting an industry police itself, and our children are paying the price.

Want to know more about the systemic failures putting young riders at risk? My upcoming book, The Illusion of ATV Safety, exposes how design flaws and weak standards for four-wheel ATVs are killing our children—and why nothing is being done about it.
