Don’t Let the E-Bike Headlines Fool You

If the Data is There, Why Aren’t We Acting on It?

  • E-Bikes; CPSC documented 6 deaths among ages 5–14 from 2017–2024.

  • ATVs; ~100 children under 16 are fatally injured every year.

  • Children have been killed by ATVs at more than 130 times the documented annual rate of e-bike deaths.

Data reflects annual national tracking from the CPSC and Pediatric Trauma Registries.

Don’t let the neighborhood e-bike trends fool you. While pediatric trauma surgeons are sounding the alarm on electric bikes, the ATV remains an undisputed heavyweight danger when it comes to child fatalities.

The documented numbers tell the story: children have been killed by ATVs at more than 130 times the documented annual rate of e-bike deaths.

An e-bike can cause devastating injuries, but an ATV combines substantial weight, speed, a high center of gravity, and a design that can overwhelm a child’s ability to control it.

When the data are this stark, shouldn’t we be asking why more isn’t being done to protect children?
